about

I have always treasured C. S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia. Their beautiful Christian symbols are more than just fiction to me. So when asked to create the musical backdrop for a dramatic adaptation of one of these beloved children's books, I jumped at the chance.

As I composed, I was always mindful of the intimate space in which the drama was to be performed. I also hoped to create music that was at once accessible, substantive, and endearing. A chamber ensemble with a string quartet core seemed a fitting choice to meet these demands. Joining forces with the strings, piano, clarinet, and French horn are an array of primitive percussion instruments, an ethnic flute, and a solo soprano. The result is a hybrid sound palate, much in keeping with Lewis's penchant for blending Greek, British, and medieval lore in his children's tales.

The musical material for the whole album centers around six simple themes (in order of appearance): Winter, the Pevensies, Lucy, Aslan/Restoration, the White Witch, and Edmund. These themes can add a new dimension to the story-telling, such as the surprise appearance of Edmund’s theme in the “Elegy for Aslan.” As we mourn the Great Lion’s heroic death, we are reminded that he willingly died in the place of the young traitor.

Ben Schaaf joined this project with great enthusiasm late in the game. He alone is responsible for adding electronic elements and virtual instruments (which were many!), finishing the mix, and composing a few tracks himself. We both grew and learned much through this process and are glad to make available to you the fruit of our labors.

We sincerely hope you will enjoy and support this album, composed, performed, and produced by volunteer student musicians in 2013.
